Freestyle Ski

Freestyle Ski is one of the fastest sports featured in the Arctic Winter
Games and Northwest Territories residents are especially proud of former
Canadian Olympian Michael Gilday who began competing in the sport at
the 2000 Arctic Winter Games.
From 2000 – 2004 Gilday won an outstanding 15 gold Ulus during that
time! Freestyle Ski must train diligently in order to make their
movements mechanically sound, because every unnecessary movement
could be a potential second lost, leaving the athlete that much farther
from the finish line.
Freestyle Ski has been a staple sport in the Arctic Winter Games since
1984 when it made its first appearance at the Games in Yellowknife, NWT.
Freestyle Ski has two age categories: Junior (Born between 1998 and
2003) and Juvenile (born between 2003 and 2006) for both male and
female competitors. A team consists of up to 16 athletes and two coaches.
